In this type of surgery, the surgeon makes several small cuts no more than half an inch long, and inserts a laparoscope – a slender tool with a tiny video camera and light at the end, to perform the surgery. That is why it is also known as keyhole surgery or a minimally invasive surgery. It enables your surgeon to access the inside of the abdomen (tummy) and pelvis without any large incisions to the skin allowing you to heal quicker with smaller scars and less pain. This means a shorter stay at the hospital, lower cost and resuming your normal activities sooner.
It is considered a major surgery and you will be advised how to prepare for it. For a few days after the procedure you may feel some discomfort and pain which can be eased through painkillers. Most patients return to their normal activities within one week after surgery.
